Pentlands Downhill

October 4, 2011 § 1 Comment

Pentlands Downhill (2011) mixed media on church floorboards, 51 x 50 cm.

Second of two direct pictorial landscapes on salvaged church floorboards, the scene is from a walk I made in the Pentlands, south of Edinburgh, on the return route walking out of the hills towards a farm. These recent works have been a refreshing return to painting for pleasure rather than for some conceptual idea, though the work relates to the over arching ideas in my practice my focus has been more on composition and aesthetics.

Palimpsest III (2011) mixed media on church floorboards, 51 x 50 cm.

The 3rd in an ongoing series of paintings looking at the agricultural formation of the British countryside, drawing inspiration from the continual re-writing over the landscape.

Palimpsest I + II

Palimpsest I (2011) mixed media on church floorboards, 51 x 50 cm.

Palimpsest II (2011) mixed media on church floorboards, 51 x 50 cm.

I consider the landscape as a large scale sculpture slowly shaped by a community over a vast period of time and so it acts as a receptacle of lives and memories. The term ‘palimpsest’ refers to the erasure of text from paper and the re-use of it, similar to the way creating new paths, fields and woods re-write old histories across a landscape.
