Grey/White/Grey

One                                       Two

One                                       Two

Left                                        Right

Stop

Pause

Elevate

Aim the camera like a gun, hunter’s gun, artist’s gun, capture nature.

Snap of twig, twigs snap, snapping shakes.

Deer Dash                            Regroup Repeat

Release pressure slowly as to hold their attention.

They are sensitive to a raised arm or sharp sound.

Foraging in the snow, small groups                                         spread            across          distance.

At each relay

The stags hold the fort

Fortify, fortification, fall back, line of defence

No man left behind.

I trace them through the snow,

Drawn, drawing.

Hoof Heel Boot Feet Foot

F L T T T

T of the twigs under foot.

Inevitable splintering

of twig

of herd

of concentration.

And then at last they break into open dash.

30

Thirty at least, pelts pelting over open terrain, clearing clearing in seconds flat.

Lost to sight

Lost to lens

My walk ends.
